I Saw Two Guys Holding Hands in Church

That’s right, I saw two guys holding hands in church.  What happened next was...basically normal. They listened to a non-judgemental, non-dogmatic sermon that emphasized action over thoughts and prayers, then socialized with the rest of their congregation over coffee.  Later that day, they helped underprivileged families prepare for the holidays. It was just like they were a regular part of the community. Because they are. Have you been looking for a spiritual home that makes you feel welcome?   Here’s the top reasons why we think the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington is the place you are looking for.

  1. Unitarian Universalists (UUs) believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every human being.
This is the  first of our seven principles- “the inherent worth and dignity of every person”.  As LGBTQ, we are aware of the importance of this principle on a daily basis.   UU’s don’t want to change anything about you. We believe you were created perfect as you are and you will be accepted into our community as your authentic self.

  2. The First Unitarian Church of Wilmington has many members of varying gender and sexual expression.
The First U has numerous members that are gay, lesbians, transgender, and gender non-conforming.  We not only welcome you and your family- we ARE you.

  3. Our children are taught “Our Whole Lives (OWL)”, a sexual education program that is inclusive.
OWL is taught to our Kindergarten/First graders, our 5th/6th graders, and then finally our 8th/9th graders.  The curriculum is age appropriate and teaches our children about all different types of families, including one parent families, same sex families, and transgender families.  It teaches our children about all forms of sexual identity, expression, and preference, and teaches them that all of these different families and choices are completely normal.

  4. We are a community of folks with open minds and hearts.
The First U is a liberal religion that welcomes all.  We strive to be the leaders in change, especially when it affects human rights issues.
